ENVY is based at Rathbone Place near Oxford Street. There is a community of post production houses around that area of Soho, as well as the arts and media companies based around Charlotte Street and Dean Street. I know the area quite well, and used to stay at the Rathbone Hotel a lot.
Josh told us how ENVY works on long form (longer programmes), shorts and commercials. The company has 100 edit suites (using AVID Symphony) over 5 sites.
They have offline and online editing processes. We learned about working offline last year.
Offline is where the rushes are run in lower quality and edited down before being passed on to the Online process which takes the criteria of the cuts and applies it to the original high quality footage and final cut the hi res format.
ENVY seems to be a huge scale editing set up. It has six machine rooms where runners will download the footage from professional tapes. These decks are network connected and can be accessed from any of the edit suites. ENVY also has colour grading and rotoscoping facilities.
Josh gave us a few tips about how to become a runner and get started in post production.
- Make yourself available for work experience, and get as much experience as possible
- Be flexible and enthusiastic
- Make as many contacts as possible
With this in mind I have made the changes to my CV as recommended in the session, and have created a contacts database for myself.
