Alex and I met up again last night to continue editing our documentary. We took into account the feedback that Chris gave when reviewing all the films and have made some changes to our film.
We rearranged the running order, as I said we planned to do in a previous post. We went through the interview again to make sure that the new running order didn't lose continuity, for example, where the climber introduces the climb known as the Flying Buttress at Stanage Edge. He later refers to the buttress in the interviews so I felt, if we were going to use those audio clips then it makes more sense in playback to use the clip introducing what the buttress is rather than have the viewer linger for up to four minutes wondering what the buttress thing was that had just been referred to in the voice over.
So last nights editing session was rearranging the scenes in to the order that we are happy with. We also reinstated the practice scenes from the bedroom, but in colour this time, not in the black and white that we had previously experimented with.
The new order also follows the narrative arc that we were keen to incorporate. Now the sequence runs:
Intro montage - title frame - bedroom - practice climb - injury - big climbs (in order)
We have reached this running order as it makes sense. The intro is followed by him practising at home, then trying the small climbs where he falls off onto his mat, then he discusses his injuries and how dangerous it is, which holds an interest for the viewer as he goes onto the next stage, the big climbs. Then the final shot is the climber reaching the top in a wide shot which includes the landscape in the background, and he has achieved the dangerous climb.
